It irks me when people complain about Valentine's day being a modern hallmark holiday. Modern "Valentine's day" is a commercial appropriation of a christian saint's feast. "St. Valentine's Day" is the catholic church's appropriation (in 496 no less) of a hell-raising Roman holiday Lupercalia. Or so the story goes. But I think that it's fine, especially in this repressed puritanical society, that we take at least one day out of the year to tell eachother how much we love them. And if we buy them some chocolate too is it really hurting anyone?
This is for Matthew. Although I love my friends and I love my family this is for him because it is Valentine's day and he is my valentine. It's easy to love him for being a great husband and now for being such a great father. It's easy to love him because he is so strong and steady and I really need that. It's easy to love him because he is so much fun to be around. It's easy to love him because he is good at fixing things and putting together Ikea furniture. But that's not why I love him so much. I love him so much because of the sum is greater than all these parts. The total Matthew is proof to me that love exists and walks the earth and that's why I love him. It is incontrovertable and ever-expanding. (I hope this solipsistic musing comes off as romantic my darling because that is how it it meant). I love you so absolutely. Be mine!
